1607. Remember that year. Remember that year because that is how
you and me got here, in America. That year is the year the first
successful colony for the English on the land that is now the United States of
America. In the first six months of that colony, 70 colonists died of the first
110 settlers on this colony, the colony named Jamestown. So what happened that
made so many colonists die?
The first 104 settlers were all males, so why did so many die. Of
those 110 settlers, from a ship list of all the settlers that went to the
colony, 47 people who were called a gentlemen, have never done anything with
their hands, they were all people of the rich. They would have to learn how to
work and use their hands unless they were so greedy, they just sat around. Also
from that list there was a group of people that the people who made the list,
did not know their occupation, which was another 30 people who probably didn’t
know what they were doing.
With people who didn’t know what they were doing, the people
probably also didn’t know how to farm to make their food. On a Rainfall Index
of Jamestown, the year 1607, in Jamestown, there was a drought. The drought
would have food become harder to grow, and they would need a great farmer to
make food with what rain they have, with about 80 people who didn't know what
they were doing, and also no farmers, so they didn't have any growing the crops
or at least didn’t have someone who knew what they were doing so they probably
didn't grow many crops, and near the end of summer, there was sickness that
killed about half the population. The sickness was probably caused by
starvation of food.
By people not knowing what they were doing, they probably had to
learn everything new. By that people didn’t know what to do when a drought was
happening, and led to starvation. When you starve, you get sick, and many
people die of sickness. So if you’re wondering why did so many colonists die in
Jamestown? The reason why, nobody knew what they were doing back then.
