Why Did So Many Colonists Die In Jamestown?

1607. Remember that year. Remember that year because that is how you and me got here, in America.  That year is the year the first successful colony for the English on the land that is now the United States of America. In the first six months of that colony, 70 colonists died of the first 110 settlers on this colony, the colony named Jamestown. So what happened that made so many colonists die?

The first 104 settlers were all males, so why did so many die. Of those 110 settlers, from a ship list of all the settlers that went to the colony, 47 people who were called a gentlemen, have never done anything with their hands, they were all people of the rich. They would have to learn how to work and use their hands unless they were so greedy, they just sat around. Also from that list there was a group of people that the people who made the list, did not know their occupation, which was another 30 people who probably didn’t know what they were doing.

With people who didn’t know what they were doing, the people probably also didn’t know how to farm to make their food. On a Rainfall Index of Jamestown, the year 1607, in Jamestown, there was a drought. The drought would have food become harder to grow, and they would need a great farmer to make food with what rain they have, with about 80 people who didn't know what they were doing, and also no farmers, so they didn't have any growing the crops or at least didn’t have someone who knew what they were doing so they probably didn't grow many crops, and near the end of summer, there was sickness that killed about half the population. The sickness was probably caused by starvation of food.

By people not knowing what they were doing, they probably had to learn everything new. By that people didn’t know what to do when a drought was happening, and led to starvation. When you starve, you get sick, and many people die of sickness. So if you’re wondering why did so many colonists die in Jamestown? The reason why, nobody knew what they were doing back then.

What Type of Reader Are You?

From sports books, to action and adventure books, and also to distant universe books, I have read a ton of books. I have stuck to more than these types of books, but what I see of what I read, is that I am a person who sticks to action/adventure fiction.

In my childhood I have read books that a bit of an adventure or something that tells a tale, one author I remember from childhood that I read a lot is Dr. Seuss. He had some great children's books that told a tale of something.

In late elementary and last year I read books from action spy books, to some fantasy books, and corrupt societies. Some the books I read from these genres are Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz, The Lightning Theif by Rick Riordan, and also Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. I see that I am a diverse reader in this age with all of the books I read.

So far this year I have my list of genres that I have read and have started to read other genres like sport books, but still, what all of these books have in common is that they all have some kind of adventure in the book that I like to read. Maybe there are other genres with books that have an action parts in them or an adenventure.
